Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc on our nation, California has extended the deadline to obtain your REAL California ID. The new extended deadline is set for May 3^rd, 2023. While the deadline may have been extended substantially, DMV authorities are urging individuals to not wait to get theirs. The extensions came about with the longer than usual wait times at DMVs throughout California. These extended wait times are a direct result of the ongoing, nationwide, Covid-19 pandemic. What is a REAL California ID?

The federal REAL ID Act places new rules on which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States. These rules and limitations also apply to one’s ability to enter certain secure federal facilities. A REAL California ID is in alignment with these new requirements and includes a star and gold bear to display so.

NOTE – Individuals who are applying for or renewing an AB 60 driver license are not eligible to receive a REAL California ID.

Necessary Documents

Proof of Identity – such as a passport or birth certificate
Documentation of your Social Security Number – such as a W-2 or a social security card
Proof of California Residency x2 – such as a utility bill, insurance bill, or a bank statement

Tips

Upload your documents ahead of time (if given the option). This expedites the process and avoids you having to wait and watch as they do it there.
