Addressing DUI Crashes Among Young Drivers in San Diego County

Reflecting on a rising issue in San Diego County, DUI-related fatalities are on the rise, particularly amongst younger drivers. According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, more than half of those charged with DUI homicide offenses this year are between 18 and 26—a troubling increase compared to previous years. In 2024 alone, DUI crashes have claimed 25 lives in 20 separate incidents, a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.

To combat this crisis, San Diego County agencies are ramping up their efforts. The District Attorney’s Office has secured an almost $900,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to strengthen DUI prosecutions and expand public education campaigns aimed at reducing impaired driving. District Attorney Summer Stephan emphasized the importance of making responsible decisions, especially during the holiday season: “Use ride-sharing services and keep friends and family from getting behind the wheel if they are impaired.”

Many organizations are directing additional resources toward enforcement and prevention. The county’s Department of the Medical Examiner received a $600,000 grant to purchase advanced toxicology equipment and train specialists, improving the ability to detect substances involved in DUI cases. Meanwhile, an almost $650,000 grant for the county’s probation department will support high-risk DUI offenders through enhanced supervision programs.

MADD

Advocacy groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are also amplifying the call for prevention. Paola Conrique of MADD highlights that DUIs are entirely avoidable: “Designate a driver, use ride-shares, and save lives. The consequences of a DUI can be devastating and life-changing.”
